## Everything in the World Is Structure

## An exploration of sixty-four structures, from front cover to back cover, through letters and the web, cats and cherries, you and me

Publisher Mediabus has released Min Guhong’s new book, Dictionary of Structures: The Structure of Sixty-four Structures. Beginning with “the perhaps obvious and thoroughly structural belief that everything has a structure,” the book dissects the objects and concepts, emotions and relationships we take for granted through the sharp lens of “structure.” The author defines structure as “the framework behind objects and concepts, emotions and events, relationships and sentences that organizes, limits, guides, and supports them,” exploring the invisible force that makes all forms possible.

Dictionary of Structures: The Structure of Sixty-four Structures traces a journey from the book’s outermost part, the “front cover,” through its innermost, “me,” to the “back cover.” Its sixty-four entries range from elements of writing—“asdf” on a keyboard, the “comma” that regulates a sentence’s breathing, the “paragraph” that holds thoughts—to “HTML” and the “website,” the skeleton of the web; the “chair,” a structure for the user’s body; and even the “cat,” a “structure that resists structure,” and the “cherry,” which cannot be swallowed in one bite. Looking beyond each entry’s outward form, the author sensitively reads the order, repetition, connections, and gaps hidden within, offering the strangeness that resides amid the familiar.

Although it calls itself a “dictionary,” the book does not follow conventional alphabetical or thematic ordering. As the introductory notes explain, readers “may read from the beginning, open to a page they like, or read just one entry chosen at random.” The author writes that “structure is not necessarily something to be explained, but something to be experienced,” emphasizing that the book is less a guide to structure than “a surface for reading made of structures.” Each page is divided by a horizontal line, with an explanation of the entry above and blank space or a device suggesting another structure below: the book’s physical form itself becomes another example of the “structure” the author wishes to discuss.

Min Guhong has an unusual background: he studied literature and programming and has worked as an editor, designer, and programmer for some thirteen years. Drawing on this experience, he crosses fields including writing, design, coding, objects, and relationships to explore the frameworks that organize and sustain what lies behind each subject. In the book, he defines structure as “a condition rather than an answer, a form rather than a result.” When readers open the book and eventually close it, as the author declares, they “can no longer encounter structure, or ‘structure,’ as they did before.” The book promises an intellectual and sensory experience that offers a new way to see the world.
