The place was sacred to every artist. The belief was that, given a perfect system, one could devote oneself entirely to creation. Each year, on the strength of that belief, just one person—the most talented—was selected and given a year of free room, board, and the finest working conditions. This year, a graphic designer fresh out of a visual communication design program was chosen. His year there was nothing less than paradise. He designed more than he ever had before, and the more he designed, the closer he believed he came to the essence of design, and of typography. He was certain his talent was real. On the last day, he met the place’s operator for the first time, quietly anticipating a contract with the country’s leading design agency or an extraordinary sponsorship offer. The operator closed his portfolio and spoke with a smile that was warm but chilling. “Over the past year, your talent has blossomed to an astonishing degree. You possess a talent that appears perhaps once in a century. There is no doubt about it.” His heart beat faster. The operator continued. “That is why you must stop designing now.” His heart beat a little faster still. “What do you mean?” The operator handed him a document. “This is not a place that produces artists. It is a place that prevents talented people from becoming unhappy because of the illusion of art and its inefficient processes. According to our analysis, to realize your talent fully, you will have to go through fifteen nervous breakdowns, two bankruptcies, and one suicide attempt over the next ten years. Even after all that suffering, your chance of recognition in the industry is only about five percent.” The operator handed him another document. “On the other hand, considering your other aptitudes, if you give up design and switch to accounting, you can have a stable job and family within five years at the latest, with about an eighty-percent chance of a happy life. Incidentally, a recommendation has already been sent to the country’s leading accounting firm.” He could say nothing. “This is the highest compliment we can pay your overwhelming talent here: removing predictable failure and suffering in advance. Please, choose the most efficient happiness.”
