One and Three Web Browsers

2025

A product inspired by Joseph Kosuth’s One and Three Chairs. Where Kosuth used three distinct media—a physical chair, a photograph of a chair, and a dictionary definition of the word “chair”—to construct the concept of “chair,” One and Three Web Browsers responds to the same structure in a slightly more economical way. This product simulates three layers using only two media: an image of a web browser and a webpage that includes a definition of the web browser.

As a result, the user who encounters this product sees a web browser within a web browser, reads about the web browser, and becomes aware of browsing the entire operation from within. In other words, this product becomes fourfold when the user is included. That is the most significant difference from One and Three Chairs, in which the audience is inevitably positioned at a distance.
