Can a perfect sofa exist? In mathematics, at least, the answer is unequivocally “true.” The moving sofa problem—finding the largest area of a planar shape that can pass through an L-shaped corridor of unit width—has challenged countless mathematicians since it was posed in 1966. Recently, however, Dr. Jineon Baek rigorously proved the optimality of Joseph Gerver’s curve, finally establishing the form of the “perfect sofa.” With an extremal area of approximately 2.2195, this sofa is a geometric pinnacle, turning while fitting the corridor’s inner and outer walls without the slightest discrepancy. It vividly demonstrates the beauty of mathematical optimization within physical constraints, with nothing left to add or remove. No sofa could be more perfect for the living room of anyone who loves mathematics. For now, however, this product exists only as a blueprint. We await a call from IKEA.
