Ahead of the twenty-first presidential election on June 3, 2025, [Min Guhong](https://minguhong.fyi) wrote the following on the [AG Lab website](http://lab.ag.co.kr), putting on the air of a citizen of the Republic of Korea who loves democracy. He seems, however, not to have considered that red might suggest a particular political party.

June 3, 2025, is the day of the twenty-first presidential election. *Vote Reminder Clock* is, as its name suggests, a clock that encourages voting. Its hour, minute, and second hands sit in the middle of the screen like the character 卜 on a voting stamp, while numbers that refuse to stay in place move instead. It is as if, rather than us reading the clock, the clock looks at us and asks, “When will you vote?”

This clock has no obligation to tell the exact time. Time flows, but its flow is not self-evident. What takes its place is a steady, indifferent gesture of encouragement. As if asking us to stop and leave a stamp, the numbers rearrange themselves at every moment, drawing the eye and calling for attention. The design is subtly uncomfortable. Anyone looking at this clock to check the time eventually arrives at the word “vote.” A paradoxical device in which someone asking the time ends up pledging themselves to democracy, perhaps? Twenty-four hours a day, every day. In any case, election day is a single day, but preparation is today.

*Vote Reminder Clock* is both a practice of designing citizens’ time and an experiment in grafting a sense of democracy onto an everyday tool. Time may be going nowhere. But where we must go is clear: the polling station.
